Fish Controversy Heats Up Ahead of Bengal Elections; Fierce Clash Between BJP and TMC

Gumavati Before the Assembly elections Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma challenged his West Bengal counterpart Mamata Banerjee to a fish-eating contest on Friday

The statement was made following claims by the Trinamool Congress (TMC) that if the BJP gained power in West Bengal it would restrict the consumption of meat and fish

Sarma refuted the charge saying there are no such restrictions in Assam which is run by the BJP।

I request Mamata Didi to send a delegate to a fish-eating competition। In a post on X he said Let us see who can eat more fish Assam BJP or TMC and end this rumour mongering once and for all

He also said that although Assam does not have any restrictions on the consumption of fish or meat the state enforces restrictions on beef according to existing regulations

While addressing an election rally Sarma also accused the TMC of helping illegal cattle smuggling to Bangladesh for money and said West Bengal needs a government that can fight illegal immigration hard

Assam Chief Minister also said that the BJP government in Assam has taken action against unlawful land occupation

April 23 and 29 will be the two phases of polling for the West Bengal Assembly with counting scheduled for May 4
