Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Thursday announced a series of major development initiatives in the Assam Legislative Assembly during the Budget Session. The announcements focused on key sectors such as power, employment, investment, and labour welfare, all aimed at accelerating economic growth and improving living standards in the state. Sarma emphasized that the government’s approach is centered on building a stronger and more self-reliant Assam through infrastructure expansion and job creation.
Kopili Hydropower Project Completion and Energy Infrastructure Boost
One of the most significant announcements was the completion timeline of the long-pending Kopili Hydro Electric Project, which the Chief Minister said will be ready within the next 10 days. Once operational, the project is expected to generate 150 megawatts of electricity, significantly strengthening Assam’s power supply system. In addition, repair and restoration work to recover an additional 25 MW capacity is currently underway. Sarma reiterated that improving power infrastructure remains a top priority to ensure uninterrupted electricity access across urban and rural regions of the state.
Massive Employment Drive and Foreign Investment Plans for Assam
In a major employment-related announcement, the Chief Minister stated that the Assam government will provide 55,000 government jobs within the first three years of its current tenure. A large portion of these appointments will be made in the education sector to address staff shortages and strengthen the public education system. On the investment front, Sarma revealed that a delegation of 20 Japanese companies is scheduled to visit Jagiroad on February 28 to explore industrial opportunities. He expressed confidence that Jagiroad could emerge as a major industrial hub, boosting manufacturing activity and generating employment for local youth.
Tea Workers’ Wage Hike and Inclusive Development Vision
Sarma also announced an increase in the daily wages of tea garden workers, effective from March 1. He said the decision reflects the government’s commitment to improving the socio-economic conditions of tea workers, who play a vital role in Assam’s economy and cultural identity. The Chief Minister described these initiatives as part of an integrated development strategy that combines infrastructure growth, industrial investment, employment generation, and social welfare. According to him, these measures collectively aim to transform Assam into a more prosperous and self-reliant state in the coming years.
