Governor Gulab Chand Kataria has expressed serious concern over the changing population pattern in border states like Assam and West Bengal. He said that the demographic situation of these areas is no less than a time bomb. He gave this warning during a recent program where he clearly said that if this change continues like this, then it can have a huge social and national impact in the future.
Fear of infiltration in border areas
The governor said that these states share borders with Bangladesh and illegal infiltration has become a big challenge here. It has also come to light in many reports that the ratio of local population in border districts is decreasing rapidly. This is not only increasing social tension but can also affect national security.
Effect on cultural and religious balance
Demographic change is not just a matter of numbers but it also affects local culture, language and religious balance. The governor said that the traditional identity of Assam and Bengal is gradually changing. Expressing concern over this, he said that if a solution is not found in time, then its effect will be seen on the coming generations as well.

Pressure on government schemes and resources
Illegal migration also puts additional burden on government schemes. The real beneficiaries suffer in basic services like education, health and ration. The Governor said that there is a need for a special policy on this subject so that the rights of real citizens can be protected and the benefits of the schemes reach only those who are entitled to it.
A concrete policy is necessary for the solution
The Governor urged the central and state governments not to look at this problem from a political perspective but to consider it a national crisis and find a permanent solution to it. Along with the security of the borders, an accurate system of citizen identification and special campaigns to identify illegal immigrants are necessary.
