Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma signed a Letter of Intent to bring the sacred Vrindavani Vastra back to Assam under a loan arrangement with the British Museum in London. This is a moment the Chief Minister described as a “Red Letter Moment,” as this initiative further strengthens Assam’s connection with its spiritual and cultural heritage. In his post, he wrote that the Vrindavani Vastra is not just a cloth, but a divine symbol of the devotion, vision, and craftsmanship of the great man Srimanta Sankardev. Bringing this cloth back to Assam is a historic and emotional achievement for the state.

The Vrindavani Vastra is renowned for its unique and extraordinary weave, ethereal motifs, and scenes from the Dashavatara and Raas Leela of Lord Krishna. It depicts numerous glimpses of Gokul and Vrindavan, making it a living cultural document. CM Sarma said that this cloth is the pinnacle of Assam’s unique craftsmanship, spiritual tradition, and devotional culture. He also mentioned that for generations, people have heard about it in kirtans, read about it in stories, and books, but very few have had the opportunity to see it. This is why bringing it back to Assam is like “one of our ancestors returning home.”
Thanks to PM Modi—A State-of-the-Art Museum Under Construction in Guwahati
CM Sarma thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi and said that the dream of bringing back the Vrindavani Vastra is coming true thanks to his guidance and inspiration. He explained that a state-of-the-art museum is rapidly taking shape in Guwahati, where this sacred textile will be displayed safely and respectfully. This museum will not only serve as a center of Assam’s cultural pride but also serve as a means to connect future generations with its heritage. This initiative is expected to give Assam’s art and culture a new identity on the global stage.
