Waqf Bill: Owaisi opposes in Lok Sabha, tears copy of Waqf Amendment Bill, gives example of Gandhi!

During the discussion on Waqf Amendment Bill in Lok Sabha, Hyderabad MP and AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi held a symbolic protest opposing the bill. Citing the example of Mahatma Gandhi, Owaisi said that just as Gandhi ji had rejected the white racist laws in South Africa after listening to the voice of his conscience, he rejects this bill in the same way. Owaisi said, “I am also tearing this law, it is unconstitutional. BJP wants to divide the country in the name of temple and mosque, which I condemn.”

BJP MP asked Owaisi, why did he tear the bill?

During the debate on the Waqf Amendment Bill, BJP MP and Chairman of the Joint Committee of Parliament on the Waqf Amendment Bill, Jagdambika Pal questioned Owaisi. He asked why Owaisi called this bill unconstitutional and why did he tore it? Pal said that the step taken by Owaisi was itself unconstitutional. On this question, Owaisi continued his talk and said that this bill is against the Constitution and it will not be allowed to pass.

Opposition parties also objected to many provisions of the bill

Opposition parties also objected to many provisions of the Waqf Amendment Bill. Leaders of Trinamool Congress, DMK and Shiv Sena (UBT) opposed various parts of this bill. Congress leader Gaurav Goyal said that Congress is not against reform in Waqf, but there are many provisions in this bill which have political purpose. Goyal raised the question whether the government is going to give religious certificates only to Muslims or will certificates be sought from other religions as well?

Congress and Imran Masood termed the bill unconstitutional

Congress MP Imran Masood termed the Waqf Amendment Bill unconstitutional and said that the government’s claims regarding it are false. He questioned how the government will register Waqf properties in six months, when this work could not be completed in the last 10 years. Masood said that the purpose of this bill is only to take another step against the Muslim community and it is against the Constitution. Opposition leaders have raised concerns about the political objective of this bill, which the BJP has made a tool for its politics.
