Chikungunya is a viral infection that spreads through the bite of the Aedes aegypti mosquito. This is the same mosquito that also spreads dengue and Zika virus. Due to the increase in the number of mosquitoes during the rainy season, cases of chikungunya are also seen more. This disease does not spread directly from person to person, but is infected through mosquitoes. The infected person may have problems like high fever, joint and muscle pain, fatigue, skin rash and headache.
Why does joint and bone pain occur in chikungunya?
According to Dr. Ajay Kumar of Delhi MCD, the chikungunya virus affects the immune system as soon as it enters the body. This virus causes swelling and irritation in the joints and bones, which becomes the main cause of pain. The immune system attacks its own bones and joints while fighting the virus, which increases swelling and pain. This causes stiffness in the tissues inside the bones, due to which intense pain is felt while walking or moving hands and legs.

Post viral arthritis and long term pain
The joint pain of Chikungunya can sometimes last for months even after the fever subsides, which is called post viral arthritis. During this time, swelling and stiffness in the joints persists. This pain is especially more painful for people with weak immunity or already suffering from diseases like arthritis. Due to constant pain and swelling, the daily activities of the patients are affected and there is difficulty in walking.
Ways to prevent Chikungunya
Protection from mosquitoes is very important to prevent Chikungunya. For this, wear clothes that cover the whole body. Do not let water accumulate around the house because stagnant water is the breeding ground of mosquitoes. Use mosquito repellent cream, coil or electric repellent. Put a mesh or net on the doors and windows of the house. Take extra care especially in the morning and evening when mosquitoes are active.
Contact the doctor immediately if symptoms appear
If you feel high fever, severe joint pain or any kind of abnormality, contact the doctor immediately. Timely treatment and proper care can prevent the serious effects of Chikungunya. You and your family members should be aware of this disease, especially during the rainy season.
