The belief of feeding honey to children is quite old. Our grandmothers often suggest that honey must be given to children at the time of Annaprasan. Recently, actress Sonam Kapoor’s son’s Annaprasan took place. She told in an interview that she did not feed honey to her son Vayu. Sonam said that she read in books and the doctor also said that giving honey to small children increases the risk of a serious disease called infant botulism.
Doctor’s opinion and safety reasons
According to Dr. Vivek Jain, Senior Director and Pediatrics Unit Head of Fortis Hospital, honey is beneficial for health. Honey is considered good in both Ayurveda and modern medicine. Honey is not only tasty but it also has many medicinal properties. But it is not safe for children of all ages.

Why not give honey to children under 1 year of age?
Dr. Vivek Jain said that honey should not be given to children under 1 year of age. The main reason for this is the risk of infant botulism. This is a serious disease, which can be caused by the Clostridium botulinum bacteria present in honey. At this age, the digestive and immune system of children is not fully developed, so these bacteria can be dangerous for them.
The right age and quantity of giving honey
When the child is one year old, then pure and fresh honey can be given to him. Initially, honey should be included in the diet gradually. Initially, about 1 teaspoon (5 ml) of honey can be given daily. Gradually the amount can be increased to 2 teaspoons. If there are any allergy symptoms like itching, swelling or difficulty in breathing, then a doctor should be contacted immediately.
Benefits of honey
Honey increases the immunity of children. It helps in fighting infection. Makes the digestive system strong. Provides relief in cough and cold. Apart from this, the natural antibiotic properties present in honey are considered beneficial for the health of children. Giving honey at the right age and in the right quantity is safe and beneficial for children.
