Rebellion intensifies in Assam Congress, workers protest fiercely over Sarputhar seat
Political activity has intensified in Assam ahead of the assembly elections. An open rebellion is now being witnessed within the Assam Congress. Congress workers on Thursday protested a plan to allocate key assembly seats to allies. This has further increased tensions in the opposition’s seat-sharing negotiations ahead of the Assam elections.

Gaurav Gogoi surrounded at Circuit House

In Golaghat district, about 300 kilometers from Guwahati, Congress workers surrounded state party president Gaurav Gogoi at the Circuit House. They strongly opposed the allocation of the Sarupathar assembly seat to the Asom Jatiya Parishad (AJP). The protesters said the regional party lacked organizational strength there. They also threatened to intensify their agitation to press their demands.

‘If you don’t listen, I’ll shave your head’

One protester said, “We are Congress workers and will not give the Sarupathar seat to the AJP at any cost. He added that if the seat is given, thousands of workers will shave their heads.” The protesters then said that Gaurav Gogoi has assured them that no final decision has been made yet.

There was also opposition to giving Binnakandi and Khowang seats

In addition to the Sarupathar seat, proposals to give the newly created Binnakandi assembly seat in Cachar district and the Khowang seat in Dibrugarh district to other parties have also been opposed. Party workers from the Dalgaon assembly constituency in Darrang district, central Assam, protested outside Gaurav Gogoi’s Guwahati home after reports suggested the seat might go to the Raijor Dal.
