The Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) has launched a new initiative in collaboration with the Indian Institute of Technology, Guwahati (IIT-G). Under this initiative, the bedroll packaging bags given to the passengers in the train will now be in biodegradable i.e. quickly melting eco-friendly bags instead of plastic. This initiative was formally launched on the occasion of Independence Day, 15 August.
Distribution of 40,000 bags and change in rail travel
On this occasion, 40,000 eco-friendly bags were distributed in about 25 major trains. These trains are running from the main terminals of Assam, West Bengal, Bihar, Tripura and Arunachal Pradesh. NFR officials said that with this change, the linen packaging given to the passengers will no longer harm the environment and the problem of plastic waste will be reduced.
Research of IIT-Guwahati and environmental benefits
These bags developed by the research team of IIT-Guwahati are completely compostable. These bags decompose quickly and do not pollute the soil, water or air. NFR says that this move will reduce landfill waste, reduce carbon emissions and save natural resources. This is part of the Indian Railways’ eco-sensitive initiatives.
Other green initiatives of the railways
The Northeast Frontier Railway has taken several eco-related steps in the past. This includes rapid electrification of railway lines, solar power generation, rainwater harvesting and installation of bio-toilets. Apart from this, AI-based intrusion detection systems have also been implemented to protect elephants in sensitive areas. All these initiatives are helping the railways to be environmentally responsible.
Big impact from small steps
Biodegradable bedroll bags may seem like a small step, but it will make a big impact for both passengers and the environment. This will not only reduce plastic waste, but will also increase awareness among people about green travel. This initiative of NFR and IIT-Guwahati is an important step towards making Indian Railways more sustainable and responsible.
