BJP MP Nishikant Dubey once again targeted the Gandhi family on Wednesday, May 28, 2025. He questioned the Congress party by sharing a letter written by former US President Ronald Reagan to Rajiv Gandhi on the social media platform X. Dubey sarcastically wrote that being a Gandhi is not easy. He asked that when it was decided in the 1972 Shimla Agreement that any dispute between India and Pakistan would be negotiated only between the two countries and there would be no mediator, then why did Rajiv Gandhi ask the then US President Reagan for help in talks with Pakistan.
Which letter was shared and what is its story
The letter shared by Nishikant Dubey was written on March 25, 1987. There was no mention of any ceasefire between India and Pakistan in this letter, but reference was made to effective measures to reduce tensions in Eastern and Western Europe. It was written in the letter that to avoid such misunderstandings in future, we are giving background information about effective processes between Eastern and Western Europe. Along with this, the letter also said that additional information is being given to the Indian and Pakistani governments which can help in reducing tensions in future. In this letter, Reagan clarified that his objective is not to interfere but to suggest ways to improve relations between the two countries and increase regional stability.

Rajiv Gandhi had sought help on the issue related to drugs
According to the letter, Rajiv Gandhi had requested the US in his letter dated January 7 to include American drug liaison agents in bilateral discussions on India-Pakistan drug control. Reagan wrote in the letter that he found this proposal very interesting and believed that fighting the threat of drugs is as much a priority for India as it is for the US. Reagan assured that the US is ready to provide assistance in this direction as per the wishes of the governments of India and Pakistan. Sharing this letter, Nishikant Dubey asked the Congress party that when there should have been no interference in the internal affairs of India, then why did Rajiv Gandhi himself seek help from the US?
Debate heated in political circles
After this attack by Nishikant Dubey, a debate has erupted in political circles. There has been no official response from the Congress yet, but many party leaders are calling it an unnecessary raking up of old issues. At the same time, BJP leaders say that this letter shows that the Gandhi family has always given priority to its political conveniences rather than national interests. This attack by Dubey has come at a time when the Congress is making strategies for the upcoming elections and the BJP is trying to unravel the old decisions of the Gandhi family. It will be interesting to see what Congress answers on this issue and in which direction this political debate goes ahead.
