Dhubri police has arrested Mukesh Gowala, accused of State Bank of India (SBI) Golakganj branch robbery, from Fatapukur area of Jalpaiguri in West Bengal. Known for his clever thefts, Gowala was absconding since March 20, when he stole Rs 4.37 lakh from Hitesh Rai, an ATM operator of SBI branch.
How the robbery happened
On the day of the incident, when Hitesh Rai was talking to a bank employee, Gowala came silently and snatched the bag full of cash and fled. The entire incident was recorded in the CCTV camera, which later proved helpful in identifying and catching Gowala.
Police launched a major operation
After the theft, an FIR was lodged at the Golakganj police station and a special team under the direction of Superintendent of Police Naveen Singh launched a major operation to nab Gowala. During investigation, it was found that Gowala was already involved in several thefts and was hiding in Jalpaiguri.
Police termed the arrest as a major achievement.
Police have termed Gowala’s arrest as a major success against the organised theft network operating on the Assam-Bengal interstate border. Police believe that after Gowala’s arrest, many more revelations may be made, which can expose this interstate network of thieves.
