A very painful incident has come to light from Dibrugarh district of Assam on Monday morning where a person was beaten to death by a mob on suspicion of stealing a goat. According to the police, the incident took place at around 10:30 am in Hatigarh Bokpara division of Bokul Tea Estate. Locals saw two people allegedly stealing a goat and the angry mob attacked both of them. During this, their scooty was also set on fire.
One died on the spot, the other is in critical condition
In this attack, one youth died on the spot while the other youth was seriously injured. The injured youth has been identified as Jyotirmoy Hazarika, a resident of Boragimath. He was immediately taken to Assam Medical College and Hospital (AMCH) where his condition is said to be very critical. Police said that the person who died has not been identified yet and the body has been sent for post-mortem.

District Magistrate and Superintendent of Police reached the spot
On receiving the news of the incident, Dibrugarh Deputy Commissioner Bikram Kari and Superintendent of Police Rakesh Reddy reached the spot and took stock of the situation. The administration has immediately increased security in the area and additional police force has been deployed to maintain law and order. Understanding the seriousness of this incident, the officials are taking full caution so that the situation does not deteriorate further.
Investigation continues, preparations for strict action against the mob
The police have started investigating the matter and it is also being investigated who was involved in the mob and who started the attack. Officials say that the culprits will not be spared and strict legal action will be taken against them if found guilty. This incident once again raises questions on mob justice i.e. ‘mob lynching’, how some people take someone’s life by considering themselves the contractor of justice without any legal process. The administration says that to stop such cases, people will also have to be aware and restrained.
