Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sharma, while talking to journalists on Monday, said that the Brahmaputra river is so huge and powerful that it will not be affected by just one source. He told that the main water source of the river is the rainfall of Bhutan, Arunachal Pradesh and Assam. Therefore, there is no need to panic immediately about the dam being built by China.
The effect of the dam is not yet decided
Sharma also said that it is not yet clear what good or bad effect this dam will have on Assam or India. He said that there are different opinions among experts on this and it is difficult to reach any conclusion right now. Therefore, it would be better to wait for now.
China’s scientific opinion and two views
The Chief Minister said that two scientific views have come from China. One opinion is that if the water of Brahmaputra is stopped, the amount of water will be reduced, which can cause damage to biodiversity. On the other hand, the second opinion says that due to the reduction in the amount of water, floods can also be reduced. Because of this, it is difficult to say whether the dam will be beneficial or harmful.
The role of the central government is the most important
Himanta Sharma said that the real decision in this matter will be taken by the central government. He expressed confidence that the central government must be talking to China on this subject or will do so soon. He also said that it is important to maintain dialogue between India and China on border issues so that water dispute does not become a big issue.
$ 167.8 billion dam project
It is worth noting that China has started building a dam costing $ 167.8 billion on the Brahmaputra river on Saturday. This dam is being built in Tibet near the border of Arunachal Pradesh. Concerns are being raised about this dam not only in India but also on many international forums.
