Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Sunday paid tribute to former President of India Pranab Mukherjee on his death anniversary. Sarma tweeted that Bharat Ratna awardee Pranab Mukherjee dedicated his life to strengthening India’s democratic system. He said the former president was not only an outstanding parliamentarian but also a scholar and a visionary politician. Sarma remembered Mukherjee as a “true supporter of Brand India” and paid tribute to him.

Sarma said Pranab Mukherjee worked for the strengthening of India’s democracy throughout his political life. He always gave priority to democratic values and policies in Parliament and other institutions. His life experience, knowledge and vision have always been a guide for the people. He played an important role in advancing and strengthening India’s democratic process. His contribution will always be remembered and will be a source of inspiration for young leaders.
Long and varied political career
Pranab Mukherjee was sworn in as the 13th President of India on 25 July 2012. Prior to this, his political career spanned more than fifty years. He served at various times as Minister of Foreign Affairs, Defence, Commerce and Finance. He had the rare distinction of working in such diverse ministries and making significant contributions in every field. His leadership and administrative ability introduced a new perspective in Indian politics and policy making.
Contribution to Parliament and Congress
Pranab Mukherjee won the election to the Rajya Sabha five times since 1969 and was a member of the Lok Sabha twice since 2004. Apart from this, he was also a member of the Congress Working Committee for 23 years, which is the highest policy making body of the party. He took many important decisions in the interest of the party and the country and played an active role in various policy making. His tenure and contribution are still remembered with respect in politics and society.
