Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Monday made a big claim which intensified the political stir. He said that senior Congress leader Ripun Bora has made a shocking revelation that Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi’s British wife Elizabeth Colburn was on the payroll of the Pakistan government. Sarma said that he was not aware of this earlier and now Bora’s statement will be recorded and further action will be taken in this matter. BJP and Chief Minister Sarma are constantly attacking Gogoi over his wife’s alleged connection with Pakistani intelligence agency ISI. Sarma also claimed that Elizabeth Colburn has traveled between India and Pakistan 19 times.
Ripun Bora’s statement and clarification
Congress leader Ripun Bora had said in a press release on Sunday that Elizabeth Colburn works in an international NGO whose network is also spread in Pakistan and other countries. Bora said that in this connection he received salary from Pakistan and he visited Pakistan several times for work. Bora questioned whether it is right to question someone’s patriotism on this basis. He said that many Indians and Pakistanis are legally working in each other’s countries. But Chief Minister Sarma called Bora’s statement a shocking confession and said that it could become a serious matter related to the national security of the country.

Strict warning from Chief Minister Sarma
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma wrote on the social media platform X that if Bora’s statement is true then it poses a serious threat to the national security of the country. He said that a person very close to a sitting MP being associated with an enemy country is a direct attack on the integrity of India’s institutions. Sarma made it clear that now that this disclosure has come to the fore, the matter will be investigated seriously. He also said that there will be no compromise on national security and the government will record Bora’s statement and take further action.
Gaurav Gogoi’s counterattack
On the other hand, MP Gaurav Gogoi has strongly countered Chief Minister Sarma’s allegations. Gogoi questioned Sarma’s mental state and said that perhaps he is saying such things due to his domestic situation. He described the Chief Minister’s allegations as “ridiculous, baseless, crazy and nonsense”. Gogoi said that the Chief Minister is behaving like an IT cell troll and making false allegations without checking the facts. This entire controversy has heated up the politics of Assam and now all eyes are on what action the government will take in this matter and whether any official investigation will be initiated.
