Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Thursday highlighted the Hindu cultural heritage of Balochistan. He especially recalled the Hinglaj Mata temple, one of the 51 Shakti Peethas of Hinduism. He said that Balochistan is very important for Hindus historically and spiritually. The Hinglaj Mata temple is located in the steep hills of Hingol National Park and it is believed that the head of Goddess Sati fell here. This is why this temple is counted among the most sacred places for the Shakti sect.
Religious and cultural significance of Hinglaj Mata Temple
Chief Minister Sarma said that for centuries, Hindu devotees from Sindhi, Bhavasar and Charan communities have been coming to this temple to seek blessings by traversing difficult desert paths. Apart from its religious significance, Balochistan is also a testimony to the ancient cultural presence of Hindus which existed here before the partition of India. He also said that this temple is revered by the Baloch people by calling it ‘Nani Mandir’. This shows that there is a unique heritage of cultural and religious respect among different communities here.

Balochistan’s freedom struggle and historical background
The Assam Chief Minister also discussed the freedom movement of Balochistan. He said that during 1947-48, the Kalat princely state tried to maintain its autonomy after the end of British rule. But in March 1948, Pakistan forcibly annexed Balochistan. This incident created deep resentment and discontent among the Baloch people. From time to time, the Baloch revolted several times in 1958, 1962, 1973 and the 2000s. Political and economic neglect and cultural suppression further fueled this struggle.
Struggles and hopes of the Baloch people in the freedom struggle
Sarma said that the Baloch people live in a region rich in natural resources but have been suffering from poverty, lack of development and exploitation for a long time. The assassination of tribal leader Nawab Akbar Bugti in 2006 gave new strength to this struggle. He said that the Balochistan movement is still the voice of the tribal people for self-respect, rights and control over their future. This is a long struggle which reflects the indomitable courage of the Balochs and their desire for freedom. Shakti Peethas are believed to be dedicated to Goddess Shakti where the body parts of Goddess Sati are believed to have fallen. Hinglaj Temple is also a part of this tradition which is a very sacred place for Hindus.
