Gaurav Gogoi, Deputy Leader of the Congress in the Lok Sabha, on Wednesday demanded justice in the death of Assamese cultural icon Zubin Garg and urged central government to confer Bharat Ratna on the late artist. During Zero Hour, he said that We request the Government of India to confer the highest civilian honor—the Bharat Ratna—on the late Zubin Garg. Gogoi described Garg as a great son of Assam and questioned the circumstances behind his mysterious death in Singapore.
Mysterious Death in Singapore
Gogoi told Lok Sabha that Zubin Garg died on September 19, the eve of an event organized by the Ministry of External Affairs and the Indian High Commission in Singapore. He said that If Assam government is calling it a murder, we want to know how a murder could have taken place abroad during an event organized by the Government of India.” Expressing grief on behalf of the people of Assam, Gogoi said, “Zubin Garg will always be Kanchenjunga for us. Today, people of Assam are missing him. We want justice for him.”

Congress High Command and Assembly Election Strategy
A day before Gogoi’s intervention, Congress High Command had reviewed the strategy for the 2026 Assam Assembly elections in New Delhi. Senior leaders, including Rahul Gandhi, were briefed on the progress in the investigation into Zubin Garg’s death. Gaurav Gogoi said after the meeting that It was good to see Rahul Gandhi asking about the progress in the investigation and whether the people of Assam have been informed.”
Normal Proceedings and Tributes in the Lok Sabha
On the same day, Question Hour during the Winter Session of the Lok Sabha was held without any disruptions. At the beginning of the proceedings, members paid tribute to former MPs who had recently passed away. Question Hour then resumed, a break from the disruptions that had been ongoing since Monday. On Monday, opposition parties had demanded an immediate debate on the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process underway in nine states and three union territories.
