The Assam government has further intensified its action against illegal Bangladeshi intruders. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sharma made it clear in a press conference in Guwahati on Saturday that now the state will not be limited to daily pushback action, but action will be taken simultaneously against both illegal intruders settled after 1971 and new entrants. The Chief Minister said that the government will not show any leniency now and will take concrete steps towards making the state free from illegal immigrants.
Action being taken on two fronts
Chief Minister Sharma said that the state government is running pushback operations on two fronts. First – those people who settled in Assam after 1971 and are still living there. Second – those new intruders who are still crossing the borders illegally. Sharma said, “Now we have got the power under the Immigrant Expulsion Act to send back any foreigner who came after 1971. Using this law, we are not only stopping the infiltrators currently but also those who are already living in the state are being expelled.”
More than 400 infiltrators were sent back
In the last 12 months, the Assam government has taken strict action and sent back more than 400 illegal immigrants. These mostly included Bangladeshi and Rohingya citizens, who were detained after illegal entry. The Chief Minister said that this process is going on continuously and it will be accelerated in the coming time. He said that the security and identity of Assam will not be compromised.
‘Pushback campaign will be even faster’
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sharma clearly said that this action is not going to stop now. “The process is going on and it will be increased further. I have ordered to speed it up further,” he said. This statement of the Chief Minister shows that the Assam government has prepared for a long-term campaign against illegal immigrants. This step is not only important for the demographic balance and security of the state, but it will also send a clear message to other states in the future that illegal infiltration will no longer be tolerated.
