Recently, a woman living in London had to have her hands and legs amputated because a dog licked her injury, due to which the woman developed a disease called sepsis. Therefore, not only dog bites but licking can also be dangerous.
According to the WHO, thousands of people die from rabies every year in India. Whether bitten by a pet dog or a stray dog, immediate medical attention should be sought. In such a situation, receiving an anti-rabies injection is essential. If the rabies injection is not administered within a few hours, the virus can spread throughout the body. Rabies affects the brain, nervous system, and heart, which can even lead to death.
What happens if a dog licks you?
According to doctors, infection can occur not only from a dog bite but also from a dog’s lick. Dog saliva also contains infection-causing bacteria. If an infected dog licks a human injury, a cut, a scratch, or the eyes, nose, or mouth, the viruses present in the dog’s saliva enter the body. These viruses affect the human nervous system and can cause rabies. This infection can lead to sepsis.
Symptoms of Sepsis
Sepsis can cause a high fever or a very low body temperature. Symptoms include a rapid heartbeat, rapid or labored breathing, very little urination, extreme fatigue, red or dark spots on the skin, low blood pressure, fainting, chills and shaking, severe pain, or discomfort.
Be careful with dogs
In such a situation, if you are injured or scratched, stay away from pet dogs. If you have a dog at home, keep it away from your mouth, nose, and eyes. If you touch the dog, wash your hands thoroughly with soap immediately. Take all necessary precautions.
