Cheese or Butter, Which Is More Harmful: Clinical nutritionist, health coach, and TEDx speaker Dr. Nidhi Nigam explains that when it comes to cheese and butter, both are sources of saturated fat and calories. Consuming these in excess can negatively impact heart health. Let’s find out from clinical nutritionist Dr. Nidhi Nigam which is more harmful to your health: cheese or butter?
Butter Contains Fat
Butter contains healthy, pure fat, with over 60% saturated fat. Butter does not contain protein or essential minerals. According to nutritionists, consuming large amounts of butter daily can increase LDL (bad) cholesterol, thereby increasing the risk of heart disease.

What Does Cheese Contain?
Cheese contains saturated fat, high-quality protein, calcium, phosphorus, and some bioactive compounds. However, if consumed in moderation, it may have a slightly positive effect on heart health. Research suggests that cheese, which is a combination of matrix proteins, calcium, and fermentation, may mitigate the cholesterol-raising effects of saturated fat.
Note:
However, neither butter nor cheese should be consumed in excessive amounts. For most healthy adults, about 1-2 teaspoons of butter or a small piece of cheese (20-25 grams) daily is sufficient for a balanced diet. A balanced diet should also include plenty of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and healthy fats such as nuts, seeds, and olive oil. Nutritionally, cheese is a better option. However, both can be included in the diet for heart health if consumed in moderation. Excessive consumption of either can lead to weight gain, increased cholesterol, and heart problems.
