Big statement of Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma: The return of intruders has started but how many have gone is still a mystery

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma told in a press conference on Saturday that India has now adopted a “push back” policy to stop illegal infiltration from Bangladesh. This means that now instead of arresting and bringing the intruders into the country, they will be returned from the border itself. Earlier, foreign intruders were arrested and sent to jail and then produced in court. But now the government has decided that they will not be allowed to enter the country.

Infiltrators also returned from Matiya Detention Center

CM Himanta Biswa Sarma said that the Government of India has sent back people living illegally from different parts of the country to Bangladesh. These include Rohingya people as well. He said that most of the people have also been sent back from Matiya Detention Center in Goalpara district. Now only 30 to 40 people are left there. At the beginning of the year 2025, 270 people were lodged there, out of which 133 were declared foreigners by the Foreigners Tribunal of Assam. Those who are still in the detention center, their cases are pending in the courts, so they have not been sent yet.

Strict monitoring on the border, situation normal

Chief Minister Sarma said that strict monitoring is being done on the India-Bangladesh border in Assam. No unnatural activity has been seen on the border in the last 10 days. He told that the central government has a separate mechanism for border security and they can give more clear information on this. The government believes that with the implementation of the new policy, the problem of infiltration will be reduced to a great extent and now every illegal intruder will be sent back before entering the country.

Thousands of intruders have been returned, the Center’s action is fast

The CM said that earlier about 1000 to 1500 intruders were caught every year. They were first arrested and kept in jails and then a long process used to go on in the courts. But now the government’s attitude has changed. Without wasting time, these people are being returned from the border itself. This “push back” policy will not only stop illegal activities but will also reduce the burden on security agencies. The government says that the security of the country comes first and no leniency will be given in this.
