Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to visit Assam again on Saturday for a two-day trip, marking his second visit to the state in less than a month. His arrival on the evening of January 17 will be greeted with a grand cultural event at the Arjun Bhogeswar Barua Sports Stadium in Guwahati, where 10,000 performers will present the traditional Bodo folk dance known as ‘Bagurumba.’ This dance, deeply rooted in Assam’s rich indigenous culture, symbolizes the prime minister’s continued effort to connect with the local people and celebrate the diversity of the region. The scale and vibrancy of the performance underline the importance of the visit and set the tone for the days ahead.
Major Infrastructure Projects on the Agenda
The following day, Modi will travel to Kaliabor to lay the foundation stone for a major infrastructure project – the Kaziranga elevated corridor. Valued at Rs 6,957 crore, this ambitious project aims to boost connectivity and improve traffic flow near the Kaziranga National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site known for its wildlife and tourism appeal. The elevated corridor is expected to not only ease congestion but also enhance safety for both visitors and residents in this ecologically sensitive area. This move highlights the government’s focus on sustainable development that balances infrastructure growth with environmental conservation.
Launching New Train Services to Enhance Connectivity
In addition to the foundation stone ceremony, the prime minister is scheduled to virtually flag off two new Amrit Bharat Express trains during his visit. The trains will connect Dibrugarh to Gomti Nagar in Lucknow and Kamakhya to Rohtak, expanding Assam’s rail connectivity with major cities across northern India. These train services are part of the government’s broader vision to strengthen transportation networks, promote regional integration, and facilitate easier movement for people and goods. Enhanced connectivity plays a crucial role in boosting economic activity, tourism, and overall development in Assam and the northeast region.
Building Momentum Ahead of Key Elections
This visit comes on the heels of Modi’s earlier trip to Assam in late December, when he inaugurated the new terminal of Guwahati International Airport and unveiled the statue of Assam’s first chief minister, Gopinath Bordoloi, after whom the airport is named. Modi had also laid the foundation stone for a Rs 10,601-crore brownfield ammonia-urea plant in Dibrugarh, reinforcing the government’s commitment to industrial development and job creation in the state. During that visit, he addressed public gatherings in Guwahati and Namrup, setting the political tone ahead of the 2026 Assam Assembly elections. This return visit continues that momentum, combining cultural engagement, infrastructure announcements, and political outreach in a strategically timed effort to connect with voters and demonstrate ongoing development.
