Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to visit Assam for two days starting March 13, during which he will inaugurate, dedicate, and lay the foundation stone for multiple development projects across the state. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced that the Prime Minister’s itinerary will cover Kokrajhar, Guwahati, and Silchar, with initiatives spanning infrastructure, power, and welfare schemes. According to Sarma, the visit is aimed at accelerating Assam’s development while addressing long-standing concerns of local communities.
Kokrajhar and Guwahati Programmes Highlight Regional Development
The Prime Minister will begin his visit in Kokrajhar on March 13, dedicating and laying foundation stones for several region-specific projects. Later, he will travel to Guwahati to participate in multiple programmes, including the release of an installment under the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi scheme. The Chief Minister emphasized that the Guwahati event will also witness the launch of a landmark initiative to provide land rights to tea garden communities, many of whom have resided in Assam for nearly 200 years without legal ownership of the land they cultivate and live on. Modi is expected to hand over the first land patta to a deserving tea garden worker, symbolizing the start of a state-wide distribution programme.
Major Infrastructure and Energy Projects to Be Dedicated
In addition to welfare schemes, the Prime Minister will dedicate the Kopili Hydropower Project, a 150 MW initiative implemented by the Assam government. Projects worth approximately Rs 10,000 crore are also slated to be inaugurated during his visit. On March 14, Modi will travel to Silchar, where he will lay the foundation stone for the proposed Silchar–Guwahati Expressway, estimated to cost Rs 22,000 crore. This expressway is expected to significantly enhance connectivity between the Barak Valley and the rest of Assam, reducing travel time and boosting economic integration within the state.
Public Meetings and Interaction with Citizens
During his two-day visit, the Prime Minister will address three major public meetings at different locations, providing an opportunity to interact with citizens and highlight the government’s development initiatives. Chief Minister Sarma stated that these engagements aim to ensure transparency and showcase progress in infrastructure, welfare, and community empowerment. After concluding the programmes in Silchar, Prime Minister Modi will depart for Kolkata, bringing an end to his intensive two-day tour focused on development, connectivity, and welfare in Assam.
