Assam BJP president and MP Dilip Saikia has congratulated Gaurav Gogoi on becoming the Congress president and also made an interesting statement regarding the 2026 assembly elections. Dilip Saikia said that now the contest of 2026 will be ‘Gogoi vs Saikia’. He said on Monday night that if he gets the blessings of the people, Saikia can make the BJP stronger in Assam. Saikia also said that he feels a little sad for Bhupen Kumar Bora as Bora took charge of the Congress for almost four years during difficult times. Dilip Saikia took a dig at Gaurav Gogoi and said that now he will have to visit not only Dhubri and Goalpara but the whole of Assam.
BJP took Saikia’s statement lightly
However, the Assam BJP leadership has not given much importance to Dilip Saikia’s statement. The party spokesperson said that elections are fought between parties and not between individuals. This statement may be Saikia’s personal view, but according to the party, the elections will be fought on the strength of the entire team and the party organization. This statement has nevertheless increased speculation in political circles whether the BJP is preparing for the future of Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. Some party leaders who are associated with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh are said to be dissatisfied with the Chief Minister’s ‘way of working’ and the influence of other leaders who came from the Congress. Therefore, Sakia’s statement is being seen in many political ways.
UOFA gets new hope
Meanwhile, the Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP) has expressed hope that Gaurav Gogoi’s becoming the Congress President will give new energy to the United Opposition Forum Assam (UOFA). It is worth noting that the Congress had formed this alliance of 16 parties against the BJP and its allies in the 2021 assembly elections. But a few months ago, the Congress broke away from this platform. AJP President Lurinjyoti Gogoi and General Secretary Jagdish Bhuiyan said in a joint statement that they wish Gaurav Gogoi all the best for this new responsibility and hope that now the anti-BJP joint front will gain strength again. He believes that a united opposition is now needed to counter the ‘dictatorial and undemocratic’ government of the BJP.
Preparation for new equations in Assam politics
Gaurav Gogoi’s becoming the Congress President and Dilip Saikia’s sharp statement have created a stir in Assam politics. It will be interesting to see what changes come in the strategy of the BJP now and to what extent the opposition is able to maintain its unity. Especially in the 2026 assembly elections, the contest can be interesting because now Congress has a young face while the BJP will have to deal with discontent within itself. Political experts believe that in the coming times, both the parties will play their cards and alliances strongly so that the power of the state can be captured. Overall, the politics of Assam seems to be preparing to take a new turn.
