Assam politics is currently taking a different turn. The issue of “sunflower oil versus mustard oil” has now erupted. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma today took a dig at Assam Congress President and Kaliabar MP Gaurav Gogoi, saying that he only knows about sunflower oil, not mustard oil. This is because his children are British citizens and British people use sunflower oil. This statement came after opposition to the BJP-government’s plan to distribute mustard oil to ration card holders.
Sharp Criticism of Gaurav Gogoi
Addressing a public meeting, CM Sarma said, “This morning I was trying to find out what people eat in England, and I found out that sunflower oil is used there. Gaurav Gogoi’s children live in England and are British citizens; therefore, they don’t know the importance of mustard oil. If we talk about sunflower oil, maybe they will understand.” He also took a dig at Gaurav Gogoi, saying that the Congress, which once fought against the British, is now following in their footsteps.
Allegations against Congress in the Zubin Garg case
Sarma accused the Congress of trying to exploit the tragic death of Zubin Garg for political gain. He said, “If the Congress truly wanted justice for Zubin, it would have supported the investigation. Instead, they are planning to use it to win the upcoming assembly elections. The Congress is now living in a state of confusion.” His statement makes it clear that there is a trend in politics to exploit even emotional issues for electoral gain.
2026 Assembly Elections and Political Rhetoric
As the 2026 Assam Assembly elections draw near, political rhetoric and humorous remarks are likely to increase. Leaders from various political parties are known to resort to sarcasm, taunts, and satirical remarks against each other.
