The Assam government is now going to make its police system completely modern and technology-based. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has made it clear that now the state police will move beyond the old traditional thinking and move towards smart policing. He shared this strategy when the fifth Superintendents of Police (SPs) conference was held at the Lachit Barphukan Police Academy in Dergaon on Tuesday. The conference was a 13-hour long discussion in which the Chief Minister along with the state’s top police officers were also present.
The future of the police was decided in a 13-hour marathon meeting
The Chief Minister wrote on social media that “A very useful day was spent during the SP Conference at the LBP Academy in Dergaon. We brainstormed for 13 hours on how Assam Police can be equipped with smart technology, modern resources and better framework so that it can deal with new types of crimes and give priority to the interests of the citizens.” In this meeting, emphasis was laid on technology-based and public-centric policing by changing the old ways of working of the police. The topics of discussion focused on cyber crime, digital surveillance, professional conduct and strengthening the institutional capacity of the police force.
Now Assam Police will be known for serving citizens and not terrorism
The police department commented on this new thinking, saying that “the vision and leadership of the Chief Minister has now put Assam Police on the path of transforming from a counter-force to a citizen-centric service.” Earlier Assam Police was known as a leading force in anti-terrorism operations, but now the government wants the police to become a sensitive force ready to serve the public and equipped with technology.
Cyber crime and digital fraud will be under special scrutiny
According to the Chief Minister, the nature of crime is changing rapidly. Now criminals are creating new challenges through digital fraud, cyber crime and international networks. Therefore, it has now become necessary that the police force molds itself according to this new era. Chief Minister Sarma is also the Home Minister of the state and it is expected that in the next phases of the conference, he will make more new announcements so that Assam Police can become more capable and accountable. This change can prove to be a new chapter of security and confidence for the citizens of Assam.
