Assam: PM Narendra Modi will soon inaugurate the new terminal at Guwahati’s Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International (LGBI) Airport and lay the foundation stone for the ₹10,601 crore brownfield ammonia-urea project in Namrup.
This information was revealed during a 20-minute meeting between Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma and PM Modi in New Delhi on Tuesday. During the meeting, the Chief Minister formally invited the PM to dedicate the airport terminal to the nation and lay the foundation stone for a new fertilizer plant.
Guwahati Airport’s New Terminal
The new terminal at LGBI Airport has been constructed specifically to enhance air connectivity and passenger handling capacity in Northeast India. Once operational, it will be able to handle over 13 million passengers annually. This will reduce air traffic congestion and position Guwahati as a major aviation hub for the entire region.
The terminal will feature state-of-the-art facilities, modern baggage handling systems, and improved passenger amenities, making it one of the most modern airports in eastern India. Officials believe the project will play a significant role in promoting tourism, trade, and regional integration.

Namrup Ammonia-Urea Project
The second significant project, the Namrup Ammonia-Urea Complex, is a major investment in Assam’s industrial sector. This ₹10,601 crore brownfield expansion project will modernize and expand the existing Namrup fertilizer plant, ensuring a sustainable supply of fertilizers to farmers across Northeast India.
Completion of the project will reduce dependence on fertilizer imports and improve the region’s agricultural productivity. Furthermore, the project will create employment opportunities and boost economic development in Upper Assam and surrounding areas.
CM’s Reaction and Future Expectations
CM Himanta Biswa Sarma expressed his gratitude for the PM’s support, saying, “It is a matter of pride for us that Honorable Modi ji has agreed. We are eagerly awaiting his visit.” He also stated that both projects are in line with the PM’s vision of a “developed India” and a “prosperous Northeast,” strengthening connectivity, industry, and agriculture in the state.
The detailed itinerary of the PM’s visit will be announced after final coordination between the PM’s Office and the Assam government. Both projects will not only lead to the development of Assam but will also significantly contribute to the progress of the entire Northeast region.
