Assam Panchayat Elections: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has registered a big victory in the Assam Panchayat elections on Tuesday. BJP has won 219 out of 397 Zilla Parishad seats. At the same time, out of 2,192 zonal panchayat seats, BJP has captured 901 seats. This victory has given a big blow to the opposition parties.
Status of opposition parties
According to the data of Assam State Election Commission (ASEC), Assam Gana Parishad, which is in alliance with BJP, has won 147 seats so far. Congress party has won 271 seats. At the same time, among other opposition parties, AIUDF has won 33 seats, Raijor Dal has won 8 seats, Trinamool Congress has won 3 seats, Assam Jatiya Parishad has won 2 seats and Aam Aadmi Party has won 1 seat. Also, 117 independent candidates have also won their seats.

BJP also leads in Zilla Parishad elections
BJP has also performed well in the Zilla Parishad elections. BJP has won 219 seats while its ally Assam Gana Parishad has won 23 seats. Congress party has managed to get only 37 seats in this election. At the same time, AIUDF has won 3, Raijor Dal 1 and independent candidates have won 10 seats.
Election was held on 7 May, results released
Panchayat elections were held in Assam on 2 and 7 May in 27 districts. This election was the first time that elections were held after delimitation. A senior official of the Assam State Election Commission said, “The counting of votes has now been completed and we are compiling the results. However, the final figures from two districts have not been received yet.”
