Assam News: Unveiling of the statue of Bodo leader Upendra Nath Brahma in Delhi and naming of the road

Assam News: In memory of Bodo community’s great leader and social worker Bodofa Upendranath Brahma, his statue will be unveiled in Delhi on May 1. Along with this, a road located in Kailash Colony, Delhi will also be named after him. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma gave information about this on the social media platform ‘X’. The Chief Minister called it a historic step in honor of Upendranath Brahma’s invaluable contribution to the Bodo community and India.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma wrote on his official ‘X’ account, “On May 1, the statue of Bodofa Upendranath Brahma will be unveiled in Delhi and a road will be dedicated in his name which will be a tribute to his unique contribution.” He informed that the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) has approved the naming of the road from A5 to A18 Kailash Colony as ‘Bodofa Upendranath Brahma Marg’. Regarding the preparations for this event, Assam Chief Secretary Ravi Kota held a meeting with the officials and reviewed the plan so that the program could be successfully completed in Delhi. The Chief Minister also thanked Union Home Minister Amit Shah for this historic decision.

Initiative to recognize Brahma’s contribution at the national level

The main objective of this event is to honor Upendranath Brahma’s contribution to education, identity and political awareness on the national platform. Chief Minister Sarma said that this event will be a proud moment for the Bodo people as for the first time such an honor is being given in the memory of a Bodo leader in Delhi. He also said that this step will inspire the coming generations that big changes can be brought in the society through education and political awareness. The dream of Brahma to empower the Bodo youth is now getting respect across the country.

Who was Upendranath Brahma?

Upendranath Brahma was born on 31 March 1956 and was a famous Bodo social worker. He played an important role in changing the direction of the student movement in Assam. In 1978-79 he served as the president of Goalpara District Students Union and then from 1981 to 1986 he was the vice-president and president of All Bodo Students Union (ABSU). Under his leadership, ABSU started focusing on political consciousness rather than cultural issues. Brahma died on 1 May 1990. In recognition of his vision and leadership, he was posthumously declared “Bodofa” i.e. protector of Bodo community on 8 May 1990. Even today his death anniversary is celebrated as ‘Bodofa Day’.
