Assam News: Two people, including a girl, were killed and two others seriously injured in an explosion in Assam’s Jorhat district on Saturday. Jorhat Senior Superintendent of Police Subhrajit Bora said the blast occurred in a rented house of a scrap dealer in Rajamaidam New Colony of the town, killing two people on the spot. He said the injured were admitted to Jorhat Medical College and Hospital in critical condition.
The SSP said the cause of the explosion is not yet known, and a forensic team has arrived at the scene to collect evidence. He said six people have been detained for questioning and the entire matter is being investigated. The police officer said the deceased have been identified as Noor Mohammad (40) and Naina Begum (8).
Explosion in a rented house
The incident occurred inside a rented house/scrap material shop in Rajamaidam New Colony, Jorhat city. Two people were killed in the blast, which occurred around 3:30 pm. Two children and women were seriously injured. The injured include a 7-year-old daughter and a neighbor. All were admitted to Jorhat Medical College and Hospital, where one girl is still in critical condition.
Body parts scattered in the room
The explosion was so powerful that it damaged the walls of the room, created a small crater on the floor, and scattered body parts. However, no fire broke out. Initially, suspicions were of an LPG cylinder explosion, but police dismissed this. Police suspect the fire extinguisher may have exploded when it was tampered with or struck with a hammer.
Being a scrap dealer, the house could have contained flammable and hazardous materials. No signs of terrorist activity or bombs have been found. Police and forensic teams have launched an investigation. The incident occurred just before the Assam Assembly elections, spreading panic in the area.
