Assam News: A new political controversy has erupted in Assam. The state government has ordered an investigation into allegations that the Bangladesh national anthem was sung at a Congress Seva Dal meeting in Sribhumi district. According to officials, the Congress Seva Dal meeting was held at Indira Bhavan in Sribhumi town on Tuesday. At the beginning of the meeting, party leaders sang two lines from the song “Amar Sonar Bangla,” written by Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore—the same poet who also composed India’s national anthem, “Jana Gana Mana.” This sparked a discussion on social media, and the government immediately ordered an investigation.
Government orders probe, minister says action will be taken once the truth is revealed
A senior district administration official stated that they had received verbal instructions from Fisheries Minister Krishnendu Paul to investigate the matter. He said, “We have received verbal orders from the minister and we are investigating the matter.” Commenting on the incident, Minister Paul said, “Congress gave birth to Pakistan, and Bangladesh was part of that country. Congress has demonstrated its love by singing the Bangladesh national anthem.”
He also said that the District Commissioner has been instructed to take legal action after verification. The minister’s statement has sparked debate in political circles and has drawn criticism of the Congress on social media.

Congress’s clarification: Don’t drag Tagore’s song into politics
Reacting to the controversy, Sribhumi District Congress President Tapas Purkayastha said that this matter is a complete attempt to politicize it. He said, “Rabindranath Tagore is the pride of India. Dragging his song into politics is unacceptable. Our pride, 85-year-old poet Vidyu Bhushan Das, only sang two lines of this song, which was a cultural expression, not a political statement.” Purkayastha further stated that it is wrong to limit Tagore’s songs, as his works convey the message of humanity and unity. He also stated that deliberate confusion is being spread in this matter to divert public attention from the real issues.
Gaurav Gogoi’s counterattack on the BJP – “The public is being misled by creating controversies”
Assam Pradesh Congress President Gaurav Gogoi also sharply criticized the BJP. He said, “The BJP government has completely failed to address public issues, so it is now creating such false controversies to divert attention.” Gogoi also stated that Rabindranath Tagore’s songs are a shared cultural heritage of both India and Bangladesh, and there is no crime in singing them.
He said, “Congress has never done anything anti-national. Rather, it is the BJP that is raising such issues to divert attention from the real problems of Assam—unemployment, inflation, and flood control.”
