The trend of AI news anchors has started in India too. On Wednesday, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma introduced a virtual anchor named ‘Ankita’ to the people through a video. Ankita is an AI-based anchor who was seen giving complete information about the cabinet meeting of the Assam government in a very clear and accurate manner. This is being considered a big digital step towards media in India.
Real-looking anchor and news in local language
The video showed that Ankita narrated the news of the recent Assam cabinet meeting in a very professional manner. Her face looked like a human and the ease of Assamese language was also clearly felt in her voice. Sharing the video, the Chief Minister wrote, “Meet Ankita who is giving information about the main decisions of the recent Assam Cabinet meeting. In this, many important decisions have been taken, from naming the Dibrugarh airport after Bhupen Hazarika to time grant for tea garden workers.”

Ankita is doing well.” At the same time, some users expressed concern that this could put the jobs of human anchors and journalists in danger. One user said, “At least a real person would have got work. At least there would have been a job opportunity.”
Presence of AI anchors increasing around the world
AI based anchors are not a new experiment. In 2018, China’s state news agency ‘Xinhua’ introduced an AI anchor named ‘Xin Xiaowei’ for the first time. Since then, many countries have adopted this technology. AI anchors can work 24 hours non-stop. They do not have to be paid salary and they can read news in many languages. Their gestures and language style can be changed according to different audiences. Although experts believe that at present this technology cannot completely replace human anchors, but it is definitely bringing a big change in the way of presenting news.
