Assam’s Law and Tourism Minister, Ranjit Kumar Das, has stirred up political debate with a controversial statement about Shyamkanu Mahanta following the death of music icon Zubin Garg. Speaking to the media, Das alleged that North East Festival organizer Shyamkanu Mahanta had repeatedly called and texted him, inviting him to Singapore and promising tourism department advertisements. Das clarified that he had “flatly refused” such offers and was not interested in any such deal.
Zubin Garg’s Honesty and Comparisons
Ranjit Das compared artists and politicians, saying, “I have known Zubin for a long time, and our bond was very strong. He helped people without any expectations. While politicians often provide assistance for electoral gain, Zubin’s generosity was genuine and selfless.” Das also said that Zubin Garg never seriously intended to participate in electoral politics, but his immense popularity and reputation would have given him the potential to garner millions of votes.

Efforts to Preserve Zubin Garg’s Legacy
Minister Das also stated that he made personal efforts to honor Zubin Garg’s legacy. He initiated several memorial projects in Bajali district, including the installation of a statue of Zubin Garg. Das emphasized, “No one has taken as many initiatives to preserve Zubin’s legacy as I have. I ensured that his contributions are always remembered.” This statement also highlighted his political and social perspectives.
Commitment to Investigation and Justice in Zubin Garg’s Death
Das also reiterated the government’s commitment to the ongoing investigation into Zubin Garg’s sudden death. He said, “No one will be spared, no matter who they are. The state government and Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma have taken a firm stance, and a thorough investigation is underway.” He also clarified that the investigation will be impartial and transparent, and that decisions will not be made under any political or social pressure.
