Assam Government Surpasses Job Promise With Over 1.64 Lakh Appointments in Education Sector

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Thursday distributed appointment letters to 5,690 candidates in the education sector, marking a historic milestone in the state’s employment drive. With these latest appointments, the total number of government jobs provided during the current term has reached 1,64,359, surpassing the initial promise of creating one lakh jobs. The ceremony took place at the Veterinary Playground in Khanapara, where the chief minister emphasized that this achievement reflects the government’s firm commitment to generating employment opportunities for the youth while simultaneously strengthening Assam’s education system.

Ambitious Plans for Education and Employment

Speaking at the event, Sarma announced plans to recruit an additional 65,000 teachers over the next five years, ensuring that every child in Assam has access to quality education. He highlighted that the government had initially pledged to provide one lakh government jobs and has already exceeded that figure by providing over 1.64 lakh appointments. “Even if we had fulfilled only a small portion of our promise, people might have been satisfied. But we wanted to exceed expectations and deliver more opportunities to the youth of Assam,” the chief minister added, underscoring the administration’s commitment to both employment and education reforms.

Transparent and Merit-Based Recruitment Process

Chief Minister Sarma also stressed that the recruitment process for all appointments was conducted in a transparent and corruption-free manner. He noted that unlike earlier governments, which could provide only 20,000 to 25,000 jobs during their tenure, the current administration has significantly expanded recruitment. “All these appointments have been made through a transparent and merit-based process. There has been no scope for bribery or unfair practices,” Sarma said, highlighting that meritocracy and accountability were central to the government’s approach.

Record Expansion of Education Workforce

The 5,690 appointments cover multiple categories within the education sector. This includes 3,515 higher secondary school teachers, 116 candidates appointed to posts upgraded to teacher positions in 2021, 197 science and graduate teachers in upper primary schools, 446 teachers in provincialized higher secondary schools, 177 assistant professors in higher education institutions, and four principals of engineering colleges. Sarma further highlighted that nearly 95,000 teachers have been recruited across Assam in the past five years, marking one of the largest recruitment drives in the state’s education history. He emphasized that technology-driven reforms and other initiatives are strengthening the education system, improving learning outcomes, and reducing dropout rates across Assam.
