The Assam government on Wednesday honored the 860 martyrs of the Assam Movement, also known as the anti-immigrant movement, on Martyrs’ Day. Martyrs’ Day is observed on the death anniversary of Khargeswar Talukdar, the first victim of the six-year-long movement (1979-85). Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma inaugurated the Martyrs’ Memorial area in Guwahati.
Sharma said, “It is an honor of my life to dedicate the martyrs’ memorial area in memory of those brave souls who fought for the glory of Ai Asomi.” He further stated that the unveiling of the martyrs’ memorial area is a tribute to their supreme sacrifice. He said, “From protecting our culture and heritage to reclaiming our lands, every effort of the government is dedicated to upholding the glory of the Assamese people and protecting the rights of all in Assam.”
Meanwhile, the Chief Minister said that Assam’s demographic pattern is changing rapidly, and stated that “almost 40 percent” of its population will be comprised of people who once came from Bangladesh.

Sarma said, “Legally, this is a separate matter, but today Assam is on the verge of being marginalized. Our culture is being marginalized on our own land. The economy is rapidly falling into the hands of people who have never had any connection with our culture and history.”
He said that while the challenge remains, the good thing is that a collective spirit exists to face it. “I am confident that our new generation will fight and continue to fight. God will bless us, and we will survive,” he said. On the occasion, Prime Minister Narendra Modi remembered the bravery of all those who were part of the Assam Movement.
“…This movement will always hold a special place in our history. We reiterate our commitment to fulfilling the dreams of those who participated in the Assam Movement, especially in strengthening Assam’s culture and ensuring the all-round progress of the state,” he posted on X. Union Home Minister Amit Shah wrote, “On Martyrs’ Day, I remember the sacrifices made by the people of Assam during the Assam Movement. They faced hardships and created history for Assam, setting a unique example of patriotism.”
The Assam Movement concluded in 1985 with the signing of the historic Assam Accord.
