Assam : Various organizations of the missing community were constantly demanding that the elections of the Missing Autonomous Council (MAC) be held soon. But instead of considering these demands, the state government has extended the term of the council by one more year. This seems to be creating an atmosphere of resentment in the community.
Another obstacle in the way of elections
In the notification issued by the Tribal Affairs Department (Plains), it was told that recently four new General Council seats have been added under the delimitation process. Due to this, the Election Commission is currently updating the voter lists and the election process has not been completed. Therefore, it became necessary to extend the term.
Earlier also got an extension of six months
It is worth noting that the first session of the present elected General Council was held on 11 February 2019 and its term ended on 10 February 2024. The state government had earlier also extended it for six months till 10 August 2024 under the MAC Act 1995 (amended). Now the term has been extended for the second time.
Why elections were not held in five months
People and the community are raising questions that when the term was extended for the first time, why elections were not held within five months. The Election Commission has started the process of preparing the voter list but it has not been completed yet. This shows administrative sluggishness in the elections.
The committee will work until elections are held
According to the government notification, this committee will continue to work until the general council elections are held or any other order is issued in this regard. However, this decision is not satisfying the people of the community because they want to get the right to elect public representatives again.
