Asaduddin Owaisi, the chief of the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM), is set to campaign in Assam in support of All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) chief Badruddin Ajmal ahead of the upcoming Assembly elections. The move is being seen as a strategic effort to consolidate minority votes in key constituencies across the state. Owaisi’s entry into the campaign is expected to add political momentum for the AIUDF, particularly in regions where minority communities play a decisive role in electoral outcomes.
Scheduled Visits and Public Meetings Planned Across Constituencies
AIUDF chief Badruddin Ajmal confirmed on Friday that Owaisi will visit Assam on April 2 and 3, during which he is scheduled to address at least eight public meetings across multiple constituencies. The campaign itinerary is expected to cover minority-dominated areas where the AIUDF has historically maintained a strong voter base. Ajmal himself is contesting from the Binnakandi Assembly seat and will be a central figure in these campaign events. According to Ajmal, discussions regarding the visit have been ongoing for some time, and arrangements have been made to ensure maximum outreach during the two-day tour.
Political Messaging and Targeted Outreach Strategy
Owaisi’s participation is likely to energize AIUDF’s campaign by appealing to minority voters and reinforcing the party’s positioning as a regional force. His speeches are expected to focus on critiquing both the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Indian National Congress, while emphasizing issues relevant to minority communities. Political observers suggest that his presence may help the AIUDF strengthen its visibility in constituencies where electoral margins are often influenced by consolidated community voting patterns. The campaign is also seen as an attempt to counter competing narratives from larger national parties by presenting AIUDF as a distinct political alternative.
AIUDF’s Electoral Position and Strategic Challenges
Badruddin Ajmal, a prominent political figure in Assam, is working to maintain his party’s relevance amid an evolving political landscape. The AIUDF has been actively strengthening its grassroots organization and relying on its core support base ahead of the elections. In the 2016 Assam Assembly elections, the party won 13 seats, and in 2021 it improved its performance to 16 seats as part of the Congress-led “Mahajot” alliance. However, despite mounting a strong challenge, the alliance failed to unseat the BJP-led coalition. Following the elections, the Congress and AIUDF parted ways and contested the 2024 Lok Sabha elections separately, where the AIUDF failed to win any seats. Owaisi’s upcoming campaign visit is therefore viewed as a significant attempt to revive momentum and reassert the party’s influence in Assam politics.
