Assam Elections 2025: Assembly elections are scheduled for April next year in Assam. Keeping this in mind, the Election Commission has launched a massive voter mapping campaign ahead of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) in the state. This process involves adding relevant information to the voter list. According to sources, this work is progressing rapidly in many assembly constituencies. This exercise is aimed at ensuring voter identification and accurate records.
BLOs Given New Responsibilities
The Election Commission has strictly instructed Booth Level Officers (BLOs) to mark voter numbers on voters’ homes and identify those without house numbers. The Chief Electoral Officer of the state is overseeing this entire campaign. Significantly, the 2025 voter list is being compared with the 2005 list, as such an intensive revision process was last conducted 20 years ago. The primary objective is to identify legacy voters, track demographic changes, and address discrepancies in the voter list.

New Census and Special Lists
This exercise is also significant because it is the first major revision of the voter list since the 2023 delimitation of seats. As part of the delimitation, the boundaries of all 126 assembly seats in the state were redrawn. BLOs have been specifically instructed to prepare a separate list of voters aged 100 years or older. Furthermore, a separate list will be prepared for households with 10 or more voters. A separate list is also being prepared for young voters who are voting for the first time.
Emphasis on Document Mandatory and Transparency
To identify new voters, BLOs will now be required to collect birth certificates, photographs, parents’ voter IDs, and proof of address. Furthermore, if a voter’s name needs to be removed, a death certificate has been made mandatory. The Election Commission believes that these strict provisions will bring transparency to the voter list and eliminate fake names. This exercise will not only include new voters but will also ensure that the elections in Assam are conducted in a completely fair and credible manner.
