Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) President Gaurav Gogoi visited the Ledo Tikak Colliery in Margherita on Monday evening. He visited the coal mine to assess the situation and interact with officials, workers, and local residents. Congress leaders were accompanied by officials and members of the Margherita Block Congress Committee. Gogoi’s visit renewed focus on the long-standing problems and related livelihood issues in the coal mining sector of Upper Assam.
Serious Allegations Against the Government and Complaints About Coal Syndicates
Speaking to the media after the inspection, Gaurav Gogoi strongly criticized the state government’s policies. He stated that despite the Enforcement Directorate (ED) report exposing the names of some coal traders, no arrests have been made. Gogoi accused the Chief Minister of allowing a “coal syndicate” to operate freely in the state, leading to the growth of illegal activities. According to him, this is hindering transparency and reforms in the coal sector. He demanded that strict action be taken against the culprits immediately to benefit the people working in this industry.
Uncertainty of the North Eastern Coalfields and the Chaleki Thermal Project
When Gaurav Gogoi was questioned about the future of the North Eastern Coalfields and the non-operationalization of the Chaleki coal-based thermal power project, he stressed the need for open dialogue between the local community and Coal India officials. He stated that a lasting solution to this problem can only be found if both parties engage in dialogue and make decisions keeping the interests of the local people in mind. Gogoi expressed hope that a strategy will soon be formulated that will increase employment opportunities and advance the region’s industrial development.
Interaction with Locals and Preparation for Elections
In the afternoon, Gaurav Gogoi also met with several residents of Ledo and Borgolai. He listened attentively to their problems related to employment, social development, and industrial activities. This visit is seen as part of the Congress Party’s efforts to strengthen its organization and connect with the public, just months before the state assembly elections. The Congress party is seeking to strengthen its influence among the working class and local people in this coal belt. Gogoi’s visit is being seen as a positive step toward raising regional issues and finding solutions.
