Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma said on Friday that the government plans to introduce a law in the state assembly to control the population of the “Mias”—a derogatory term for Muslims—in the state. He claimed that the community will become the largest community in the state in the next census. Speaking to reporters, he said, “When the next census is completed and its results are out, trust me, Mia Muslims will constitute 38 percent of Assam’s population. And they will be the largest community. This is the current reality of Assam.”
CM Claims: Five Years of Hard Work Showing Results
CM Sarma said, “If the work done in the last five years had been started 30 years ago, the situation would not have been so dire.” He added, “A fight has now begun, and we will take it to the desired outcome. Our effort is to ensure the safety of our people and secure their future.” He also said that maintaining long-term pressure on the “Mias” is essential to improve the situation.
Claims of Land Rights and Demographic Change
CM Himanta Biswa Sarma had previously claimed that the state’s tribal and indigenous communities were facing an “invasion” by “people of one religion,” who were allegedly attempting to change the population structure by grabbing land in various areas. This statement comes after Prime Minister Narendra Modi, during his visit to the state last month, claimed that the Congress party supported infiltrators and illegally settled them for vote bank gains.
Future Strategy and Outlook for the Assembly Elections
The CM further stated that his government was working on all fronts and that the BJP would retain power with a landslide in next year’s assembly elections. Sarma said, “This will be a BJP government, I am 100 percent confident of that. Elections are not the main issue for us. Our priority is ensuring benefits like employment, land leases, etc.” His statement clearly indicates that the party is preparing to make population control a key election agenda and is poised to win the next election.
