Assam CM Himanta Sarma Raises Alarm Over Rising Attacks on Hindus in Bangladesh

Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma has voiced serious concern over recent incidents of violence targeting the Hindu minority in Bangladesh. Speaking at a government event in Sribhumi district, which shares a long border with Bangladesh, CM Sarma highlighted the distressing situation faced by Hindus in the neighbouring country. He affirmed that the Indian government stands firmly with the minority community in Bangladesh and emphasized the moral obligation to support and protect them from violence and harassment. The central government has already taken note of the issue, while Assam’s state government has heightened security measures along the border to monitor any potential impact on Assam.

Security Vigilance Strengthened Along Assam-Bangladesh Border

Acknowledging that unrest in Bangladesh could have direct consequences for Assam, particularly in districts close to the international boundary, CM Sarma said the state government is on high alert. Increased vigilance and strengthened security protocols have been implemented to prevent any spillover of violence or unrest into Assam. While foreign affairs fall under the jurisdiction of the central government, the Assam administration plans to formally request the Union government to take all necessary steps to ensure the safety and security of the Hindu minority in Bangladesh. Sarma condemned the recent acts of violence as highly condemnable and stressed that protecting vulnerable communities transcends political boundaries.

Growing Threats to Minorities and Need for Caution

The Chief Minister also highlighted recent political and social developments in Bangladesh that have contributed to a rise in mob violence and targeted attacks against minority groups, especially Hindus. He pointed out that these alarming trends demand constant monitoring by Assam’s security agencies to ensure that no unrest crosses over into Indian territory. Sarma underlined the importance of staying vigilant and closely tracking developments across the border to maintain peace and security within Assam. He called on authorities to prepare for any eventuality and urged communities to remain calm but watchful during this sensitive period.

With nearly 13.13 million Hindus living in Bangladesh, accounting for about eight percent of the population according to the 2022 census, CM Sarma’s comments reflect broader regional concerns regarding the safety of minority communities in the country. He emphasized the need to provide moral support and reassurance to Hindus facing persecution in Bangladesh, underscoring India’s commitment to standing by minorities beyond its borders. As tensions continue to rise, the Assam government’s proactive approach aims to safeguard its own citizens while advocating for human rights and protection of minorities in the neighbouring nation.
