Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Friday inaugurated the 6th Commando Battalion headquarters at Ambikapur in Tinsukia district, highlighting the government’s plan to strengthen Assam Police and prepare the state for emerging security challenges. Addressing the ceremony, Sarma emphasised that modernising the security infrastructure is a long-term vision of his administration. He stated that the expansion of commando battalions would ensure Assam is better prepared to face evolving threats while enhancing overall public safety across the state.
Strategic Expansion Across Assam
Sarma noted that prior to 2021, Assam had only one commando battalion headquartered at Nandakata in Kamrup district. When he assumed office as Chief Minister, he decided to establish multiple new battalions to ensure strategic coverage of the state. “We decided to set up five new commando battalions across Assam, keeping in mind both security and border protection,” he said. The Chief Minister outlined that new battalions have been set up at Dholcherra in Hailakandi, Geleki in Sivasagar, Pabhoi in Biswanath, and Doldoli in Karbi Anglong, with Ambikapur now becoming the sixth battalion.
Modern Infrastructure for Commandos
Describing the Ambikapur battalion as a major achievement, Sarma said the campus has been developed on 331 bighas and can accommodate around 400 commandos. The facility includes modern barracks, 149 housing quarters, parade grounds, drill facilities, a 10-bed medical centre, and a primary school. Essential amenities such as Namghars and ATMs have also been integrated within the campus to provide comprehensive support for personnel and their families. “This battalion reflects our commitment to providing modern facilities for the commandos while strengthening Assam’s security framework,” he added.
Border Protection and Future Preparedness
Sarma further informed that the commando battalion at Diphu is ready for inauguration, while construction at other locations is progressing. The battalion at Sadiya, in particular, is expected to strengthen security along Assam’s border with Arunachal Pradesh. The Chief Minister emphasised that these initiatives will not only enhance preparedness for internal security challenges but also contribute to stability and peace in border regions. He concluded by stating that modern commando battalions, strategically located across Assam, will play a key role in ensuring the safety and security of the state in the coming years.
