Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma visited Baksa district on Monday and met with those injured in the violence outside the Baksa jail. On this occasion, he handed over compensation cheques of ₹2 lakh each to Deepak Medhi and Bidyut Kalita. The Chief Minister assured the injured and affected families that the state government will bear all medical expenses and provide continued assistance to the affected families. This move is aimed not only at helping the injured but also at restoring peace and trust in the region.
Cause of Violence Outside the Jail
Violence erupted when the five main accused in the bizarre death case of beloved Assamese singer Zubin Garg were brought to the Baksa district jail under heavy security. As the convoy approached the jail, a large number of protesters gathered there, throwing stones at vehicles and clashing with security forces. Approximately 21 people were injured in the violent clashes, including 10 policemen and a dozen journalists. Several civilians also fell victim to the violence. Security forces used mild force to control the situation, and several protesters were arrested.

Government Response and Security Arrangements
Speaking to the media, Chief Minister Sarma expressed serious concern over the incident and reiterated the government’s commitment to maintaining peace and justice in the state. He stated that the welfare and safety of the injured is the administration’s top priority and that such violence will not be allowed to occur again in the future. Police and security agencies immediately transferred the accused to a new high-security section of the prison. Security surveillance was strengthened and security measures were reviewed to prevent any potential riots.
Importance of the Chief Minister’s Visit and Compensation Scheme
The Chief Minister’s visit and the compensation scheme are crucial to restoring peace in the area and reinforcing the state government’s message of responsibility, compassion, and zero tolerance for lawlessness. This will provide mental and financial support to the affected families. Officials say the administration is vigilant and prepared to prevent any recurrence of any violent incident. This move also sent a message that the state government will not show any laxity in maintaining law and order and will ensure the safety of the citizens.
