Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma Announces Kopili Hydro Project Completion in 10 Days

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma made a series of major announcements on the concluding day of the 15th Assam Legislative Assembly during the final Budget Session ahead of the upcoming Assembly elections. The most significant announcement was the completion of the long-pending Kopili Hydro Electric Project within the next 10 days. Sarma informed members that the project would generate 150 megawatts (MW) of electricity, and repair and restoration work to revive an additional 25 MW capacity at the Kopili plant is already underway. He emphasized that the inauguration of this project would mark a major step in strengthening Assam’s power infrastructure.

Strengthening Power Infrastructure a Priority

The Chief Minister highlighted that providing uninterrupted electricity to households and industries remains a top priority for his government. Sarma pointed out that the electricity board in Assam has now become the fifth most efficient in India, delivering 22 to 23 hours of continuous power across the state. He noted that historically, Assam lacked adequate power generation capacity of its own, leading to frequent outages and reliance on external sources. “Today, Assam can proudly say it has developed robust electricity infrastructure, ensuring energy security for all citizens,” he said during his address.

Renewable Energy Initiatives in Assam

Sarma also shared details about the state government’s efforts to diversify into renewable energy. Earlier this year, on January 16, he inaugurated a 70 MW solar power project at Khudimari Part-II in Dhubri district, near Kokrajhar. He described the project as a major milestone in Assam’s transition towards clean energy. Additionally, the government has initiated a new 25 MW hydropower project in Karbi Langpi, demonstrating its commitment to expanding renewable energy capacity alongside traditional hydroelectric power projects like Kopili.

Boosting Assam’s Energy Future

The Chief Minister expressed confidence that these initiatives will not only meet Assam’s growing power needs but also contribute to economic growth and industrial development across the state. By completing the Kopili project and expanding renewable energy sources, Sarma aims to provide sustainable and reliable electricity to all citizens. These projects are expected to reduce dependence on imported energy and enhance Assam’s role as a self-reliant state in the energy sector. With power infrastructure improvements as a focus, Sarma highlighted that the state is now better equipped to support its citizens and industries efficiently.
