Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma today visited GMCH Hospital in Guwahati, where a newborn died tragically in the NICU. The Chief Minister personally reviewed the matter with the doctors and the hospital administration. He said that such incidents are absolutely unacceptable in a premier medical institution. A three-member high-level committee has been constituted to investigate the incident, which will submit its report within 3–4 days.
Video conference and directions
Chief Minister Sarma also held a video conference with the principals and senior experts of all medical colleges in Assam. He said that strict and effective measures should be ensured to prevent recurrence of such tragic incidents. The Chief Minister made it clear that three children were kept in the same machine despite there being empty machines, and this cannot be justified on the pretext of increasing number of patients.

Describing the incident as a serious crime
The Chief Minister termed the incident as a “wrong and unpardonable crime” and assured that strict action will be taken on it. He said that in sensitive matters such as child care, negligence will not be tolerated. Meanwhile, the nurse on duty has been suspended. The Chief Minister stressed that accountability will be fixed and no negligence will be tolerated.
Parent lodges FIR
After this tragic incident, the father of the newborn, Utpal Bordoloi, has lodged an FIR against the GMCH officials at the Bhangagarh police station. He said that the principal of the hospital has assured a fair investigation. The father has also demanded the postmortem report, so that the truth of the entire incident can come out.
Three-member high-level committee to investigate
In view of the seriousness of the incident, a three-member committee has been formed, which includes senior officials and medical experts. The committee will have to submit its investigation report within 3–4 days. The Chief Minister said that on the basis of this report, strict action will be taken against those responsible and concrete steps will be taken to prevent such incidents in future.
