The Assam Cabinet on Thursday approved the release of ₹250 crore to the Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) under the State-Owned Priority Development Fund (Rural) for the financial year 2025–26, reaffirming the state government’s focus on accelerating development in the Bodoland region. The decision was taken at a meeting of the Council of Ministers held at Lok Sewa Bhawan, chaired by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. Officials stated that the funds will be utilised for rural infrastructure and priority development projects across BTC areas, with a strong emphasis on improving road connectivity, livelihood opportunities, and access to basic civic amenities. The allocation is expected to provide a significant boost to grassroots-level development and enhance the overall quality of life in rural Bodoland.
Strengthening Peace, Growth, and Governance in BTC
Highlighting the importance of the decision, the Cabinet noted that focused and sustained financial support to the BTC is critical for maintaining peace, promoting inclusive growth, and ensuring long-term stability in the region. Bodoland has witnessed notable transformation following the signing of the Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR) accord, and continued investment is seen as essential to consolidate these gains. The approved funds are expected to strengthen local governance, support community-based development initiatives, and improve the delivery of public services at the village level. By prioritising rural development in BTC areas, the government aims to bridge regional disparities and reinforce trust between institutions and local communities.
Environmental Protection and Recognition of Sporting Excellence
In a significant step toward environmental conservation, the Cabinet approved the declaration of Kumari Beel (270 hectares) and Dhamar Beel (337 hectares) in Goalpara district as Proposed Reserved Forests under the Assam Forest Regulation, 1891. This move is aimed at preserving biodiversity and protecting ecologically sensitive wetland ecosystems that play a vital role in maintaining environmental balance. In another decision, the Cabinet chose to honour sporting excellence by appointing Simu Das, a member of the Indian women’s blind cricket team that recently won the Women’s T20 Blind World Cup, as a Physical Instructor under the Directorate of Sports and Youth Welfare. The appointment not only recognises her outstanding achievement but is also expected to inspire young athletes, particularly those with disabilities, across Assam.
Security, Land Rights, and Industrial Growth Initiatives
To strengthen national security infrastructure, the Cabinet approved the transfer of 607 bighas of government land at Kareng Chapori in Dhemaji district for setting up a new Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) Group Centre. The move is expected to enhance security preparedness and provide strategic support in the region. Under Mission Basundhara, the state’s flagship initiative to resolve land-related issues, the Cabinet approved land allotment to 308 families, offering them long-awaited land rights and legal security. Additionally, the Cabinet cleared the allotment of land required for the upcoming Ammonia-Urea Project, whose foundation stone will be laid by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on December 21. The project is expected to significantly boost fertiliser production, strengthen Assam’s industrial base, and contribute to economic growth and employment generation in the state.
