Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Saturday assured the people of Cachar district that not a single village in Cachar will be merged with Dima Hasao district. He called the issue “completely closed,” saying the state government is committed to protecting Assam’s territorial integrity, the dignity of women, and the prosperity of its citizens. Addressing a large public gathering in Lakhipur, Chief Minister Sarma categorically stated, “It is the Assam government’s guarantee that not a single village in Lakhipur will be merged with Dima Hasao. The Congress is spreading such false rumours, but I want to assure the people that nothing like this will happen.”

CM’s assurance on border dispute – “The matter is now completely closed”

The Chief Minister’s statement comes at a time when Cachar district has been witnessing speculation for the past few weeks that 19 villages in the Lakhipur subdivision could be merged with the neighboring Dima Hasao district as part of an administrative reorganization. This has created an atmosphere of discontent and fear in the region. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, calling the issue a “closed case,” said the government would not compromise the state’s borders under any circumstances. He said, “We will not give even an inch of Assam’s land to anyone. Protecting the unity and integrity of the state is our top priority.”

Civil Organizations and Protests

Earlier, the Citizens’ Rights Preservation Committee (CRPC) strongly opposed the government’s proposed plan in August. The committee alleged that the decision was taken without any consultation with local residents. The committee also claimed that the move was influenced by the demands of the Dimasa National Liberation Army (DNLA) and the Dima Hasao District People’s Council (DPSC). A meeting was reportedly held on the issue under the chairmanship of Debolal Gorlasa, Chief Executive Member of the North Cachar Hills Autonomous Council.

The committee demanded that the government withdraw the decision and directly communicate with the people of the affected villages. But now, with this clear statement from the Chief Minister, the controversy appears to be over.
