All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) MLA and General Secretary Rafiqul Islam has strongly criticised Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma’s Independence Day address. Islam called the speech “unfortunate” and “hate-driven propaganda” aimed at creating division among communities. He said that instead of celebrating freedom fighters, sharing achievements of the last five years, or presenting future plans, the CM chose to spread fear among the public. According to Islam, Sarma’s comments about “unknown people” possibly becoming Assam’s chief minister in the future were misleading and unnecessary.
Comparison With Prime Minister’s Speech
Islam further highlighted that both Prime Minister Modi from the Red Fort and Himanta Biswa Sarma in Guwahati were spreading the same narrative about “illegal intruders.” Islam called this false propaganda. He added that during the Congress rule of 53 years, including Tarun Gogoi’s 15-year tenure as CM, no land was given to landless Muslims unjustly. Even families with Indian citizenship records dating back 150-200 years were made doubtful voters during both BJP and Congress regimes. Islam stressed that the CM’s statements are politically motivated and fear-inducing.

Accusations Against BJP and Congress
Rafiqul Islam accused Himanta Biswa Sarma of projecting that the Congress would give land to Muslims if it returned to power. Islam clarified that both BJP and Congress are equally guilty of misleading people, and the CM is intentionally scaring the public. He also noted that constitutionally, a Muslim can become Assam’s chief minister, but creating fear around this possibility is irrelevant. Islam insisted that the state’s priority should be unity and employment for all communities, including Hindus, tribals, and Muslims, instead of polarisation.
Questions on Infiltration Claims
Addressing Sarma’s claims about infiltration from neighbouring countries, Islam questioned why, after years of BJP rule and Prime Minister Modi’s 12-year tenure with Amit Shah as Home Minister, illegal entries from Bangladesh, Myanmar, or Nepal have not been stopped. He called it shameful that the CM blames lakhs of infiltrators for changing Assam’s demography. Islam highlighted that despite Muslims being around 35% of Assam’s population, there is no Muslim minister in the state cabinet, no Muslim MLA from BJP, and no Muslim SP in 34 districts.
Education and Reforms for Muslim Community
Reacting to the CM’s remarks on “illegal people” admitted to medical colleges, Islam said that Muslims are being unfairly defamed for not educating their children, while those who are pursuing education are also criticised. He emphasised that issues like population growth and children exist, but the AIUDF is implementing reforms. Islam concluded that the CM’s speech is misleading the public and harming communal harmony in Assam, instead of addressing real problems like equality, development, and employment.
