AI craze in rural India: 55 percent of youth are using it in everyday work

The use of artificial intelligence is rapidly increasing among youth in rural areas of the country. According to a recent survey, 55 percent of rural youth now regularly use AI for daily tasks. These youth are relying on AI tools for studying, translation, writing, and job preparation. This was revealed in the Youth AI Aspirations and Adoption Report, prepared under the JanAI initiative of the Head Held High Foundation. The report includes responses from 3,005 rural youth.

Youth Using AI in Everyday Tasks

According to the survey, 55 percent of rural youth use AI almost every day. 28 percent use it occasionally. Only 17 percent reported not using AI. For many youth, AI is becoming a means to overcome language barriers. The report states that 40 percent of youth rely on AI for translation, which helps them understand English. Meanwhile, 33 percent of youth use AI tools for writing, such as school assignments, resumes, and online applications. Although AI use is rapidly increasing, only 14 percent of rural youth currently generate direct income from it. Most are using it as a learning and preparation tool. The report indicates enthusiasm among youth for AI skills. Over 90 percent of respondents said they would like to enroll in a government-certified AI course. Furthermore, 61 percent believe such certification will improve their job prospects.

AI Initiative Reaching Villages

The JanAI AI initiative has provided AI education and training to over 75,000 youth in 50 districts across 16 states over the past year. In collaboration with local administrations and educational institutions, efforts are underway to expand this initiative beyond cities to rural areas. The initiative aims to make 50 million citizens AI literate and equip 2 million students with AI skills by 2029. The report states that for rural India, AI is becoming not just a new technology but a source of confidence and opportunity. It is enabling youth to write better, learn new things, and prepare themselves for jobs. However, experts believe that real change will occur when AI becomes more than just a medium of learning, but also a sustainable source of employment.
