Following its recent defeat in the Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) elections, speculation is rife that the United People’s Party Liberal (UPPL) may break away from the National Democratic Alliance (NDA). However, the party clarified on Wednesday that the final decision on whether to remain in the NDA will be taken at the party convention in November. The party stated that no formal decision has been made yet and the issue will be discussed in detail later.
District-level leaders propose separation from NDA
Addressing the press, Dhananjay Basumatary, UPPL councillor from Manas Serfang area and former BTC executive member, said that some district leaders had proposed a separation from the NDA during a party meeting. He said, “A meeting of the UPPL was held at Gabbaru Khunda Manas Resort on Tuesday. During the meeting, some members suggested that the UPPL should soon separate from the NDA. However, the party leadership decided that a decision on this issue will only be taken after a detailed review at the November convention.”
Several senior leaders, including party president Pramod Boro, were present at the meeting. The main objective of the discussion was to identify the shortcomings in the party’s election strategy and analyze the sentiments of the public.

Introspection on reasons for defeat and performance review
Basumatary further stated that the main purpose of the meeting was to review the reasons for the party’s defeat in the BTC elections. He said, “The people of the Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR) have given the mandate to the BPF (Bodoland People’s Front). In such a situation, it is essential for our party to assess its weaknesses. We also discussed how much support our cabinet minister Urkhao Gwra Brahma received from the NDA government and what achievements our MP has made. Only after considering all these aspects will the party take any final political decision.”
He also added that the UPPL leadership is completely united and engaged in a process of introspection. The party wants to ensure that its future strategy aligns with the expectations of the people and the development of the region. BPF Chief congratulated, new government urged to work in the people’s interest
Dhananjay Basumatary, displaying political courtesy, congratulated BPF Chief Hagrama Mohilary and expressed hope that his government would work for the welfare of the people of the Bodoland Territorial Region. Basumatary, who was recently re-elected for a second term in the 2025 BTC elections, stated that the UPPL would not take any hasty decisions. He reiterated that the party prioritizes the interests of the people and regional development above all else and that all decisions would be taken collectively.
He concluded by saying, “For us, the future of the people of Bodoland is more important than any alliance. Therefore, every decision of the party at the November convention will be taken after careful consideration and keeping in mind the sentiments of the people.”
